The Caribbean
Since Evangeline was born in Haiti and home schooled by her mother until she was fourteen, her early influences were filled with the exotic sounds, scents and colours of the Caribbean. Her painting was naturally imbued with an awareness of rich vibrant colour and only became less so when she chose to use the more subdued colours that she encountered in Canada. Later on in her life the colours and influences tended to blend so the viewer might become aware of incongruent elements or colours appearing in some of the artwork. She returned frequently to the Caribbean and her love of the sun, water and the colours of her birthplace always shone forth in much of what she did as an artist.
